Fitness Tip #14: Supplements Can Not Replace a Healthy Diet

Before I get into this, I want to say that I don’t think supplements are bad. I just think that there is a time and a place for them, and they aren’t going to fix a poor diet plan. Through personal experience I can say that supplements can’t replace a good diet and in the early going it’s more important to master the basics of becoming healthy and fit. Supplements are called “supplements” for a reason. They are meant to assist a little bit but aren’t a solution. Focusing on nutrition and creating healthy habits will be a much better approach when first starting out.

Here is a good way to explain it. Imagine that you are taking a test worth 100 points. All 100 points involve making good habits, exercising, staying hydrated, calories, macros, sleep, and so much more. Now imagine you get at the end of the test and there is a potential for some bonus points worth up to 5 points. The 5 would be the supplements part. It’s not going to fix a poor fitness plan, but it might aid in hitting daily requirements when it comes to nutrition. That might not be a perfect example, but the point is that supplements won’t fix poor habits or a bad diet.

So, to summarize, could supplements help on a fitness journey? Possibly, they can help in getting the recommended daily amount of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. Just realize that supplements alone can’t replace proper nutrition and a good diet. Also, it’s important to read the labels on the back of them.

I speak from personal experience because there was a point in time where I noticed I started to gain unnecessary weight and feel bloated. I couldn’t figure out why until I started to test out certain foods in my diet to figure out what was causing it. I eventually eliminated the protein powder I was using and quickly started to lose the extra weight and feel better. Now could this have been just certain ingredients in a particular protein powder. Sure, but it taught me that my body was going to react to different foods and ingredients differently than someone else. Just because someone else gets results with something doesn’t mean it will work for me. It’s important to monitor how the body reacts to certain foods and ingredients.

Summary:

I think that early on its important to focus on hitting macros, proper nutrition, calories, and working on a diet. Then, when good habits are created, decide on what to work on next.
