Fitness Tip #3: Choose a Goal

Having a fitness goal is important because it gives a sense of direction in which to go. I started to get the best results when I created a fitness goal because it gave me an idea of what to achieve. By having a goal, it aided me in staying on track.

So, it’s good to come up with a goal that has value. With that being said, there are some very important parts that helped me in creating fitness goals that had value. For this fitness tip, I’m going to go over the parts that I put into creating a fitness goal and why having a goal is so important.

Parts of Creating a Fitness Goal

1. Be Honest of Current Situation

It’s easy for us to be our own number one fan but true progress and improvements are made when we be honest with ourselves. When I first started off on my fitness journey, I wasn’t honest with myself of what I needed to do to reach fitness goals. It was only when I left my ego at the door and took an honest look at myself that I started to truly find where to start on my fitness journey and what goals to strive for. So, what I did many years ago was look in the mirror and first list the things I had done well up to that point. Then, I would figure out what I needed to improve upon, which was a lot, but that’s okay. I knew that although I had a lot to work on at least I realized it and was willing to start putting in the work to become better. So, after making a list of things I needed to work on in order to reach my future fitness goals, I needed to choose a simple and effective starting point and stick with it. Which brings me to the next part.

2. Keep it Really Simple

The first fitness goal is just the first step in becoming healthy and fit. So, it doesn’t have to be anything complicated.

Example, when I first started moving in the right direction on my fitness journey, I had an image of what I wanted to look like and be able to do but it did involve me being leaner. So, I decided the first place to start was to lose weight and make that my primary focus.

3. Ask Myself “What is my why?”

There are all sorts of reasons for getting in shape but it’s important to find all the reasons why getting in shape is so important.

Examples of why someone wants to get in shape

  • Have less aches and pains
  • Feel confident
  • Become stronger
  • Help with performing in a hobby or sport

Finding the “why” for reaching fitness goals is important for being a driving force in staying on track. Find it and make a note of it. Personally, I wanted to feel more confident.

4. Be Realistic

It’s important to be realistic about a timeline to reach fitness goals. For example, it’s realistic to want to lose 0.5 or 1 pound of weight per week. Make sure the expectations are realistic, this helped me in not getting discouraged along the way.

Summary

Having a fitness goal is a crucial part in improving over time. By constructing one that has value, keeping it really simple, being realistic, and finding the reason for trying to reach the fitness goals.
