Fitness Tip #51: Getting Started In The Gym

A useful tool to get in shape that helped me was to get a gym membership. BUT keep in mind that it’s only useful if it’s used. For this fitness tip post, I will go over what I would start with if I were to hit the reset button and get started in the gym for the first time. Future posts will go more in depth on what to do when at the gym and what I would do in order to structure a workout routine.

Step 1: Do Research on Local Gyms

The first step I would do is to do research on the local gyms to figure out which one is the best fit. For me, I would look for a gym that had good reviews, was open 24/7 (or as close to 24/7 as possible), and a fair price.

Everyone has different situations and needs. Find the best fit.

Step 2: Start Going to the Gym Slowly

If I were to start over at the gym, I wouldn’t go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. I would start by going to the gym once per week and going to the gym at the same time and day each week for a couple of weeks. Then, after being consistent with that for a couple of weeks, slowly start adding days to arrive at the gym.

I wouldn’t worry about doing a complicated routine when starting out. I would first work on just showing up at the gym to get comfortable. Create good habits first. See previous tips to learn more about good habits.

Step 3: Learn The Equipment

The first thing that I would start doing once at the gym is to focus on learning the equipment that’s in the gym. This involves learning proper form, the best exercises for each body part, and how to warmup and cooldown properly. Perhaps even asking for advice from more frequent gym goers. Then watching some videos on how to perform the exercise correctly and figuring out what equipment to add into my workout routine.

Summary:

I would focus on just showing up and learning the equipment first. Then, over time, slowly start to structure the workout routine.
